Dear Friends:

As a new millennium dawns, California is faced with balancing the dual tasks of protecting our valuable natural environment while continuing to meet our energy needs. To achieve this goal, it is more important than ever to help California’s children understand the pivotal role science and technology will play in the future and to encourage them to imagine and create new, innovative solutions to 21st century problems.

Because of its unique, hands-on approach, the Energy 2000 Calendar has been instrumental in motivating students to take part in energy-related scientific and technological activities. In this calendar, thirteen young artists have portrayed a future in which creative, cutting-edge technologies power a clean and secure society.

I commend the public and private organizations who have worked together to sponsor the Energy 2000 Calendar. Their investments have been a driving force in this campaign.

On behalf of the people of California, I extend best wishes for a successful and prosperous New Year.
