- Courtney
looked at Morgan's frightened eyes, at the way she stepped
back from the hole.
- "We
have to stick together," Courtney said, putting a hand on
her friend's shoulder. "We can't leave you behind."
- Morgan
sighed. "Okay. I'll go," she said reluctantly.
- Courtney
linked her arms through Morgan's and Collin's, then looked
up and spoke to the nothingness around her, to the annoying,
whispery voice. "We're going to find those crazy puzzle pieces
and when we do, we want to go home."
- The
blazing light flickered.
- Bright.
- Dim.
- Brighter.
- Dimmer.
- Somewhere
in the distance thunder boomed.
- All
around them laughter rang out.
- Go!
Fast! Bring back the puzzle pieces! Do not fail -- or else.
- Courtney
didn't like the sound of those words, but she planned to follow
through on the order. They had to go into that dark black
hole. They had to find the puzzle pieces. She had the feeling
they'd better hurry. And -- they couldn't fail. It seemed
to be the only chance they had of ever going home.
